About the CDL Knowledge Test

The Commercial Driver's License (CDL) knowledge tests are administered by each state under standards set by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). Nearly every CDL applicant must pass the General Knowledge test (typically 50 multiple-choice and matching questions covering safe driving and cargo transport). Most drivers also need the Air Brakes test, since most commercial vehicles use air brake systems, and Class A drivers pulling a trailer need the Combination Vehicles test as well.

Why this matters: The Air Brakes test is required for most commercial vehicles. If you don't pass it, you'll receive an "L" restriction on your CDL prohibiting you from driving vehicles equipped with air brakes, a major limitation for most trucking jobs.

Why Practice Before the Test

Beyond passing the written test, the concepts here (air brake function, coupling procedures, pre-trip defect spotting) are the same fundamentals examiners test again during your skills test. Solid practice here pays off twice.

Study Guide

How to Prepare for the CDL

About the real test

The CDL general knowledge test covers safe driving and cargo transport. Most drivers also need Air Brakes (required for most commercial vehicles) and Combination Vehicles (required for Class A tractor-trailers).

Things that make the biggest difference

Don't skip Air Brakes even if it feels optional

Failing to test on air brakes results in an "L" restriction on your CDL, barring you from driving most commercial trucks. Nearly every driver needs this endorsement.

Pre-trip inspection knowledge carries over to your skills test

The same defect-spotting knowledge tested in writing gets tested again, hands-on, during your skills test. Learning it well here saves you double the work later.

Stopping distance questions are common and testable

Understand that stopping distance increases sharply, not just proportionally, with speed. This shows up across General Knowledge and Combination Vehicles questions.

Frequently Asked Questions

The CDL general knowledge test typically consists of 50 multiple-choice and matching questions focused on safe driving and cargo transport.
Air Brakes is required if your vehicle has air brakes, which most commercial trucks do. Combination Vehicles is required for a Class A CDL involving a tractor-trailer.
The pre-trip inspection is typically part of the skills test, not the written knowledge test, but examiners expect you to identify safety defects correctly. Failing to identify a critical defect can fail that portion of your skills test.
