About the US Citizenship Civics Test

The civics test is one part of the naturalization interview conducted by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). If you filed Form N-400 on or after October 20, 2025, you'll take the redesigned 2025 version: USCIS maintains a list of 128 official civics questions, the officer asks you up to 20 of them during your interview, and you must answer at least 12 correctly to pass. If you filed before that date, you're tested on the older 100-question version instead, where the officer asks up to 10 questions and you need 6 correct answers.

There's also a 65/20 special consideration: if you're 65 or older and have held lawful permanent resident status for 20+ years, you only need to study 20 specific questions (marked with an asterisk on the official USCIS list), and you can take the test in your own language.

Note on current officials: A few of the 128 official questions ask you to name the current President, Vice President, Speaker of the House, and Chief Justice. Because these answers change over time, USCIS asks you to confirm the current names at uscis.gov/citizenship/testupdates before your interview rather than relying on any third-party source, including this one.

Why Practice Before the Interview

The real test is oral, an officer asks you the questions directly and you answer out loud, in English (unless you qualify for the 65/20 or another exemption). Working through the material as multiple choice first is a fast way to check what you already know and find the gaps before interview day, when there's no time to think it over.

How to Prepare for the U.S. Citizenship

About the real test

The 2025 USCIS civics test draws from 128 official questions across American Government, American History, and Symbols and Holidays. Your officer asks up to 20 of them at interview and you need 12 correct to pass.

Things that make the biggest difference

Check current officials before your interview

A handful of the 128 questions ask for the current President, Vice President, Speaker of the House, and Chief Justice. These change over time, always confirm the current names at uscis.gov/citizenship/testupdates rather than trusting a fixed answer sheet.

Know which version applies to you

Filed Form N-400 on or after October 20, 2025? You get the 128-question version (20 asked, 12 to pass). Filed before that date? You get the older 100-question version (10 asked, 6 to pass).

The 65/20 rule can make this much easier

If you're 65+ and have been a lawful permanent resident for 20+ years, you only need to know 20 specific questions, and can take the test in your own language.
