About the HESI A2

The HESI Admission Assessment (A2) Exam, published by Elsevier, is used by many nursing and allied health programs as an entrance exam alongside or instead of the ATI TEAS. The full exam has up to 8 possible sections: Reading Comprehension, Vocabulary and General Knowledge, Grammar, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Anatomy and Physiology, and Physics. Unlike the TEAS, the HESI A2 is modular, each nursing program chooses which sections applicants must complete, and most programs only require 4 to 5 of the 8.

Check your program's exact requirements first: Some programs also require Biology, Chemistry, or Physics, and some don't require Anatomy and Physiology at all. This practice covers the 5 sections required by the largest share of programs, always confirm your specific program's list before assuming this covers everything you'll be tested on.

Why Practice Before the Test

Because HESI A2 sections are typically scored and reported individually to your program, and math sections often include dosage-style calculations relevant to nursing specifically, practicing the actual question formats builds both the academic skills and the nursing-context comfort the real test rewards.

How to Prepare for the HESI A2

About the real test

The HESI A2 has up to 8 possible sections, but it's modular, each nursing program picks which ones applicants must complete. Most require only 4-5, most commonly Reading, Vocabulary, Grammar, Math, and Anatomy and Physiology.

Things that make the biggest difference

Confirm your program's exact required sections first

Don't assume you need all 8 sections. Check your specific program's requirements before deciding how much to study biology, chemistry, or physics.

Math often includes dosage-style calculations

Unlike a general math test, HESI A2 math leans into medication and IV-rate style calculations relevant to nursing. Practice those specifically, not just general arithmetic.

Anatomy and Physiology is the most commonly required science section

If your program only requires one science section, it's most often A&P, not biology, chemistry, or physics.
