About the NBDHE

The NBDHE, developed by the Joint Commission on National Dental Examinations (JCNDE), is the national written licensure exam required to become a dental hygienist in the U.S. It covers dental anatomy, periodontology, radiology, infection control, dental materials, patient assessment, and community health.

Scope note: This test covers NBDHE written exam content only. Most states require a separate regional or state clinical licensure exam testing hands-on skills, which is not covered here. Check with your state dental board for those requirements.

Why Practice Before the Test

The NBDHE covers a wide breadth of dental science and clinical practice content, much of it in case-based questions that test applied judgment. Practising realistic multiple-choice questions with full explanations builds the recall speed and clinical reasoning you need, especially for the periodontology and clinical services questions that carry the most weight.

How to Prepare for the NBDHE Exam

About the real test

The NBDHE covers dental hygiene content across scientific basis, patient assessment, and provision of clinical services, combining discipline-based questions (anatomy, periodontology, radiology) with case-based questions built around realistic patient scenarios.

Things that make the biggest difference

Case-based questions reward reading the whole patient picture

A significant portion of the exam presents a patient case and asks several related questions. Read the full case first, medical history, radiographs, periodontal findings, before answering any individual question.

Periodontology and radiology are consistently high-weight content areas

Understanding periodontal disease classification and radiographic interpretation shows up repeatedly, both in standalone questions and embedded in case scenarios.

Infection control questions follow clear, current CDC-aligned protocols

Sterilization procedures and cross-contamination prevention have objectively correct answers based on established infection-control guidelines. These are dependable, learnable points.
