The SIE (Securities Industry Essentials) is FINRA's entry-level exam covering foundational securities knowledge, open to anyone. The Series 7 (General Securities Representative) is the full registration exam required to sell most securities products, and must be taken alongside a firm sponsorship. This test covers the shared and overlapping content tested on both.
Both exams are heavily regulation- and product-detail-dense, with a lot of easily-confused terminology (bond types, account types, order types). Practising realistic multiple-choice questions with full explanations builds the recall precision needed under real exam time pressure.

About the real test
The SIE (Securities Industry Essentials) is a prerequisite general-knowledge exam anyone can take, covering regulatory framework and capital markets. The Series 7 builds on it with the specific product and customer-account knowledge needed to sell most securities, equity, debt, packaged and variable products, and options.
Take the SIE seriously even though it's the 'easier' exam
The SIE's regulatory framework and capital markets content forms the foundation the Series 7 builds on. Gaps here compound into harder Series 7 questions later.
Options questions are disproportionately difficult, budget extra time
Options strategies, and the math behind maximum gain, maximum loss, and breakeven, are consistently the hardest content on the Series 7. Don't leave this section for the last few days of prep.
Customer account and suitability rules are a guaranteed scoring area
Questions on account types, prohibited practices, and suitability obligations follow clear regulatory rules with objectively correct answers. These are some of the most learnable points on the exam.
