About the NCLEX-PN

The NCLEX-PN (National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nurses) is the licensure exam every Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) and Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN, the title used in California and Texas) must pass in the United States, developed and administered by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN). Like the NCLEX-RN, it is a computer adaptive test (CAT): question difficulty adjusts based on your previous answers, and the exam ends once the computer can determine with statistical confidence whether you are above or below the passing standard.

The NCLEX-PN tests care within the LPN/LVN scope of practice: contributing data, reinforcing teaching, administering medications per order, and reporting findings, rather than the independent assessment, initial care planning, and complex clinical judgment tested at the RN level on the NCLEX-RN. If you're studying for the RN exam instead, see our NCLEX-RN practice test.

Why this matters: Every U.S. state and territory requires NCLEX-PN pass results before issuing an LPN/LVN license, and your state Board of Nursing determines eligibility, application steps, and any state-specific requirements on top of the national exam itself.

Why Practice Before the Test

The NCLEX-PN tests applied clinical judgment within the LPN/LVN scope, not just recall. Many questions present a patient scenario and ask what an LPN/LVN should do next: administer care within scope, or report a finding to the RN or provider. Practising realistic scenario-based questions builds the judgment the exam is designed to measure.

How to Prepare for the NCLEX-PN

About the real test

The NCLEX-PN is a computer adaptive test for practical and vocational nurses (LPN/LVN), covering the same 8 NCSBN Client Needs framework as the NCLEX-RN but scoped to coordinated care under supervision rather than independent management. It tests applied clinical judgment through patient scenarios, not just recall.

Things that make the biggest difference

Coordinated Care replaces Management of Care, know the scope difference

LPN/LVN practice works under the direction of an RN or provider. Questions test what you can appropriately do within that supervised scope, not independent care-planning decisions reserved for RNs.

Pharmacological Therapies is one of the heaviest-weighted categories

Medication administration rights, common side effects, and recognizing when to notify the supervising nurse are core to this category. Prioritize it alongside Safety and Infection Control.

Prioritization questions still use ABC and Maslow's hierarchy

Even within a supervised scope, many questions ask what to address first. The same Airway-Breathing-Circulation and basic-needs-first frameworks used for RN prioritization apply here.

Frequently Asked Questions

The NCLEX-PN is the licensure exam for Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) and Licensed Vocational Nurses (LVNs), while the NCLEX-RN is for Registered Nurses. Both are developed by NCSBN, but the NCLEX-PN tests care within the LPN/LVN scope of practice, such as administering medications and reinforcing care under supervision, rather than the independent assessment, care planning, and clinical judgment tested at the RN level.
Eight Client Needs categories: Coordinated Care, Safety and Infection Control, Health Promotion and Maintenance, Psychosocial Integrity, Basic Care and Comfort, Pharmacological Therapies, Reduction of Risk Potential, and Physiological Adaptation.
Yes. Like the NCLEX-RN, the NCLEX-PN is a computer adaptive test (CAT) developed by NCSBN, where question difficulty adjusts based on your previous answers until the computer can determine with statistical confidence whether you are above or below the passing standard.
